It’s the time of year again when people's thoughts turn to booking a well-deserved holiday. Whether it's a romantic getaway or fun for all the family, there is no better way to relax. Unfortunately, most burglaries occur at exactly this time - when homes are empty between 10am - 3pm, not during the night contrary to popular belief. The best way to achieve peace of mind on your holiday is to ensure your property and belongings are safe and secure before you leave. Here are some things to consider to ensure your home is as safe as possible while you enjoy your time in the sun:
Make it look like you are home - leaving a light on or a car in the drive can be all it takes. Also, it may be worth cancelling any deliveries that are due, as things like stacked up newspapers on your doorstep can make it obvious nobody's home, as can unanswered delivery drivers!
Keep valuables hidden - This is a good idea whether you are away from home or not. Items such laptops and car keys should be hidden from view at all times. If valuable items are on display it will only makes you home more tempting to potential criminals.
Make sure your door is secure - Home security systems are a great idea, but they can also be pricey and therefore not in everyone's budget. Upgrading your old front, back or patio doors can make your home more secure without the hefty price tag of a home security system. If your windows and doors are clearly secure and hard to open it could deter any unwanted visitors.
Neighbours and friends –If you are friendly with your neighbours it is a good idea to let one of them know when you will be away, so they can keep an eye out for you. The same goes for friends, you could have someone drive by on their way to work to make sure there are no parcels or calling cards giving away your absence.
